Raquel Jimeno and Daniel Raby star in the latest Dave Reynolds-directed short film, The Playhouse.The Playhouse is an essentially silent short film, which uses action, sound effects and music to build tension.
The Playhouse was the first project we shot on HD. We are shooting several shorts using different cameras in a long-term plan to do a low-budget feature and to decide which camera we'll use. Each of the shorts we are doing - while not related in story - contains an element of the film-making process that we will likely employ on the feature.

The Playhouse was shot in Turner Valley, Alberta over two days in July 2006. Gina (Editor, co-Producer) and I have been wanting to do a project that would allow us to play with sound design, with the intent of relaying a mood and building suspense. My first draft of what would eventually turn into The Playhouse had an extra character and was filled with dialogue. I'm used to writing dialogue but after working on the script and thinking about the sound design I thought, what if there wasn't any dialogue? From that point the script went in a different direction and it became a challenge to move the story along and build suspense without any character exposition. I eventually added one line of dialogue at the end - so it's not truly silent - but overall I'm pleased with the result.
